Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek islands. The island is separated from Turkey by the Chios Strait. Chios is notable for its exports of mastic gum and its nickname is The mastic island. Archaeological research on Chios has found evidence of habitation dating back at least to the Neolithic era.
Syros or Syra is the “Lady of the Cyclades”, since it is surrounded by many islands belonging to the Cycladic island complex. Today it is the capital of the South Aegean region and it was once the cultural, naval and industrial center of the nascent Greek state. It developed greatly after the settling of refugees from Asia Minor and the islands of Psara, Chios and Crete, especially after 1826.
